Polk was, in fact, nicknamed “Young Hickory” after his Tennessean presidential predecessor Andrew Jackson, whose nickname was “Old Hickory.” Mike was confused based on a mishearing of the song “James K. Polk” by They Might Be Giants. Lyrics here. The town of Old Hickory, Tennessee is in fact named after Andrew Jackson, who is buried nearby at his estate, The Hermitage.
